Jawbone Patents Body Fat Percentage Measurement Using Smartphones, Tablets And Wearables
Device
makers are increasingly looking for ways to move the health tracking
market forward, and a new patent filing from device maker Jawbone offers
a clue to what might come next. Jawbone had a patent application
published by the USPTO
recently that describes a method for measuring body fat percentage with
existing devices, including smartphones and tablets, or a wristband
like the UP24, using the sensors said hardware already carries on board.
The
patent describes how the system would use things like the display,
accelerometer, gyroscopes, microphones, GPS and more to tell the user
how best to place the device to measure body fat percentage. It would do
this by broadcasting an “impulse” using onboard vibration motors and
measuring the response that comes back; put simply, the phone, tablet or
other gadget would jiggle your fat and measure the frequency of the
jiggles to provide you with an estimate of body fat percentage.
Jawbone’s
patent would work in tandem with an app on the device, which could make
up part of a comprehensive health tracking app or one made specifically
for the purpose of body fat percentage measurement. This would
represent a new measure tracked by devices – traditional ways of
calculating body fat for mobile health monitoring platforms involves use
of a dedicated external device, like the Withings Smart Body Analyzer
digital scale, for instance.

Square is one of those apps you may have heard of, but have no idea what it does -- because it mostly sells point-of-sale software and readers to businesses. It has just quietly expanded its consumer presence with Square Order, however, which looks like the customer-based app used in conjunction with Square Pickup for merchants.
We
says "looks like" because the app has quietly slipped into the iOS and
Android (Beta) Play stores without any official announcement. Using it
seems simple enough: you locate a restaurant, cafe or shop (Whole Foods,
for instance) from a list of Square Pickup merchants. Then, you can
place a pre-order, pay for it and receive a notification from the app
when it's ready.
That'll put it into competition with apps like PayPal's wallet and GrubHub,
though so far Order is only available in New York and San Francisco
(more cities are promised soon). We've reached out for more info, but if
you're in one of those 'burgs, grab it here.
CES 2014's home theater gear is the same, but better, and that's a good thing (wrap-up)
There
was a surprising amount of promising home theater tech at CES 2014,
focused largely on making existing products better, rather than entirely
new product types.
Living room tech always has a big presence at CES, but progress can often seem frustratingly slow, especially while other product categories make big leaps forward year after year. CES 2014
was a refreshing change of pace, as I was surprised to find quite a few
interesting home audio and video products on the show floor. While
nothing was truly groundbreaking, there's lots of solid, incremental
progress that should be showing up in home theater gear in 2014. And
that's a lot more exciting than "concept" products that never make it to
store shelves.
Over-the-air DVRs dominate, Google TV resurrected, and Roku TVs ditch the box
The coolest home video products were dominated by a comparatively old
technology: over-the-air TV. While none of it was new for CES 2014, Tablo, Simple.TV 2 and Channel Master's DVR+
were all showing off their latest over-the-air DVRs, which all look
vastly improved on the options that were available a year ago.
Meanwhile, Aereo's streaming over-the-air TV service raised $34 million in financing
and is aiming to expand to 50 cities by 2015, as long as the company
can fend off the lawsuits by the broadcast network giants, including CBS
(the parent of CNET).
Also piquing my interest was Hisense's Pulse Pro, an "Android
TV" box that looks like what Google TV will morph into. It has a
redesigned home page, plus an excellent remote with a built-in mic and
gesture control. And if you want your streaming video without a separate
box, the new Roku TVs from Hisense and TCL look promising, especially for secondary rooms where you don't want any extra clutter.
Sound bars evolve, and everyone wants to take on Sonos
On the home audio side, sound bars have almost entirely taken over.
While there were plenty of traditional sound bars at the show, the big
story was pedestal-style sound bars designed to sit under your TV
instead of in front of it. Nearly every major manufacturer rolled out a
big, flat sound bar this year, encroaching on a space that until
recently had only a few competitors, such as Zvox and Bose.
Along similar lines, every manufacturer is also looking to take on Sonos' multiroom wireless audio system in 2014. Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and Pure
were just a few of the manufacturers showing off new wireless audio
solutions from your home, although I've yet see anything that seems like
a serious challenger to Sonos. If you don't need a whole home audio
solution, there were also (of course) many, many Bluetooth speakers at CES 2014, plus Rocki's promising low-cost dongle solution.
The PS4 expands its living room capabilities
And while it's not strictly home-theater tech, the coolest thing I saw at the show was PlayStation Now, Sony's upcoming streaming gaming platform that will work with the PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and some 2014 Sony Bravia TVs. Sony also announced a plan for cloud TV services
-- including recorded and live TV -- but there weren't enough details
available at the show to determine if it's something worth getting
excited about.
The PS3 and PS4 were included (along with LG TVs) in Dish's Virtual Joey announcement, letting you access content from your Hopper DVR without the need for a separate box.
The PS4 may have lagged behind the Xbox One in living room tech at launch, but it looks like the gap will be shrinking soon.
The Fitchburg Police Department said officers responded to Guilford Road for a report of shots fired. Police said approximately 13 shots were fired toward an occupied vehicle.
Nobody was injured, the department said.
Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a white sedan with out of state license plates, the report noted.
Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the department at 608-270-4300.

The Ultilmate One-Piece Home Theater System….
• As a self-contained space-saving 3D-sound system, the LS-T10 features a
six-channel digital amplifier to power the six-driver array, with four
full-range drivers on the front, a speaker on each side, and an active
subwooferon the underside. AuraSphere digital signal processing manages
output levels and equalization to create an all-enveloping 3D
soundfield, complete with selectableMovie, Music, and News sound modes
to optimize playback of various types of content.
• The unit also doubles as a powerful home hi-fi system, with
Bluetooth wireless streaming technology and a USB port for flash memory

• The LS-T10 is powered by AuraSphere DSP (Digital Signal Processing)
technology. It works by optimizing driver output to create a 3D surround

best) to create a 3D soundfield that places the listener in the center
of the action, wherever they’re sitting Stream Your Audio with Built-In Bluetooth….
• Pair your cellphone, smartphone, tablet, or PC to the LS-B50 and
stream wirelessly via the onboard Bluetooth technology. From your
smartphone’s music apps (like Spotify, SoundCloud, and other internet
radio services) to locally stored libraries, Bluetooth technology
streams content quickly and easily, and the LS-T10 reproduces the sound
faithfully and powerfully. Your podcast binges will sound amazing! Pre-Programmed Sound Modes….
• Movie Mode: Onboard AuraSphere technology applies custom EQ filters to
get the most out of movie and game soundtracks. Deeper bass and an open
mid-range carry dialog clearly, all enhanced by AuraSphere’s panoramic
3D soundfield
• Music Mode: For music, you want plenty of punchy bass, that doesn’t
drown out vocals and strings. AuraSphere manipulates the EQ and sound
pressure levels to best suit music playback, while expanding the
soundfield so that you enjoy balanced stereo sound no matter where
you’re sitting
• News Mode: This sound mode makes dialog more intelligible and
maintains clean, balanced response for all types of content, including
TV programs, movies, and news. Withthis mode engaged, you won’t have to
keep raising the volume to hear what’s going on. The LS-T10 simply makes
TV sound clear and rich.

• The LS-T10′s efficient six-channel digital amp, six full-range
drivers, and a powerful active subwoofer reproduces audio sources with
powerful depth and exquisite realism. Whether airing a Spotify playlist
from your phone, storming an enemy position in Call of Duty, or relaxing
with a DVD, the LS-T10 takes you deeper into the moment.
High Quality Audio Decoding…
• Dolby Digital is a high quality audio format commonly encoded on DVDs,
Blu-ray Discs, and in TV broadcasts. Compatible TVs can pass Dolby
Digital audio throughto the LS-T10 for richly detailed playback enhanced
even further with your choice of AuraSphere sound mode.
Wide Selection of Audio Inputs….
• Audio from your TV (and any media players connected to it) is passed
to the LS-T10 via a single coaxial or optical digital audio cable. You
can connect otherdevices (such as smartphones, tablets, and MP3 players)
via a 1/8″ (3.5 mm) analog audio input. A USB port will play MP3 files
stored on USB-compatible smartphones and flash memory drives, and you
can use the system remote to selectalbums, playlist, & tracks.
Obeys Your TV’s Remote….
• The LS-T10 comes preprogrammed with IR codes for nine major TV brands
(and learning capability for others), which means it switches on
automatically with your television and responds to your TV remote volume
commands. For everyday use, the LS-T10 is set-and-forget, seamlessly
replacing flat-screen sound with immersive TV audio.
Go Green With Your Home Theater System
Using less power is en vogue in all parts of the country and the world
of home theater and audiophile products is no exception. Today’s
uber-thin HDTVs use many times less power than plasma HDTVs from just a
few years ago. Audiophile Class-D switching amps (known as digital amps)
use far less power than Class-A audiophile amps from the past. Single
ended triode (SET) audiophile electronics are also easy on the power.
Lighting control systems help curb the use of AC power in modern home

3D TV To Make A Come Back?
By: HomeTheaterReview.com, February 22, 2014
Despite most of the big names in television all but abandoning their
hopes that 3D would be a driving force behind people’s television
purchases, there appears to be some good news on the horizon for
stereoscopic fans. A new report by Research and Markets claims the
global flat panel market will increase 15.4 percent from 2013-2018. Some
of this resurgence seems to be attributed to the rise of 4K technology,
which is able to display more convincing and less headache-inducing 3D
effects than 1080p was able to. But mainly the rise is attributed to 3D
gaming, which has increased in popularity so much that manufacturers
have taken notice and begun manufacturing and upgrading 3D TVs to keep
up with the trend. (more…)
House of Cards Now Streaming In 4K
By: HomeTheaterReview.com, May 1, 2014
Well, the onslaught of 4K Ultra HD TV at CES 2014 is finally starting
to bear some fruit. Netflix exclusive (and critical fave) House of
Cards is now streaming in 4K. It’s still not perfect, as there are
compression artifacts, but it’s still a big boost for the struggling
tech as it finally gives people a way to get content outside of Sony’s
proprietary player. (more…)
Though the Internet finally pushed Moviefone’s
famous-yet-obsolete call service out of business earlier this year,
AOL’s nostalgia-inducing call-in showtime directory hasn’t yet thrown in
the flag. This morning, frequenters of the Moviefone website/blog were
greeted with a new blue user interface and a post introducing the
company’s fresh re-branding effort, which includes updated mobile apps
and a new framework that now includes search functions for both
movies and TV – episode listings, cast information, air times, and
curated Watch Lists are just some of the new offerings. The dedicated
page for Scandal has listings for every episode across three seasons.
Clicking the “Watch Now” button next to each episode triggers a
drop-down menu with availability and pricing across multiple mediums:
for Scandal, there are HD, SD, and HD+ versions of the show available on
Amazon, Vudu, iTunes, YouTube, and Netflix, with prices ranging from $2
to $3 per episode. Clicking one of the options takes you directly to
the streaming service’s page for the respective movie or episode.
Moviefone’s blog post also included a link to its page for
Marvel’s The Avengers as an additional example showing off the new
search function. The page included an embedded Rotten Tomatoes score,
cast and credits, 10 critic reviews and 150+ fan reviews, related news,
trailers and clips, and viewing choices ranging from a free HD
version available with an Epix account, to $24 HD and $18 SD purchase
options via Best Buy’s Cinema Now service.
According to the blog post, Moviefone’s updated mobile app is good to
go for Android, but the iPhone and iPad versions aren’t quite ready yet
– the company says it’s “just making sure experience is camera-ready,”
and that it “is coming later today.”
Apparently, Moviefone is on the prowl for the new voice to greet film
and TV fans alike. If you think you could provide the iconic voice for
the new Moviefone, text “STAR” to 265265 for more information.

[ezcol_1half] With The Amazing Spider-Man 2,
one of comic-books’ most popular and cinematically reliable heroes is
back in action. Perhaps a little cynicism has seeped into the franchise,
what with it being rebooted so soon after Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s
perfectly acceptable trilogy, but Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield have
maintained the spirit of the character and instilled his universe with
intense stakes and emotion. And lots and lots of backstory. And lots and
lots of character seeds for future sequels and sidequels. But I
digress.
This
time, Spider-Man faces at least three supervillains, notably the Green
Goblin (Dane DeHaan), Peter Parker’s frenemy and the wealthy heir to the
Oscorp fortune. There’s also Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Electro (Jamie
Foxx), who’s been showcased extensively in the film’s trailers. Like
Peter, Electro is the result of an Oscorp accident, a dweebish scientist
named Max who falls into a tank of electric eels. (I hate when that
happens.) “He transforms into a cool, glowing blue villain named
Electro, who’s like a high-voltage cross between The King of Comedy‘s stalker Rupert Pupkin and Doctor Manhattan from Watchmen,” writes EW’s Chris Nashawaty. “He’s a powerless man who now has more power than he knows what to do with.”
While
all current superhero tentpoles now seem bloated, at least the current
Spider-Man series can rely on the genre’s truest romance, with real-life
couple Garfield and Emma Stone providing believable sparks. At the end
of the last film, Peter vowed that he wouldn’t put Gwen Stacy in harm’s
way, but as they graduate from high school and their feelings for each
other develop and mature, he finds that might be impossible. It’s a
solid, human foundation to heap gigabyte over gigabyte of comic-book
action.
Read Nashawaty’s entire review, as well as a round-up of other notable critics, below.
Chris Nashawaty (Entertainment Weekly)
“Director Marc Webb’s dizzy, slickly enjoyable sequel gets a ton right.
It’s a Marvel spectacle that manages to deftly balance razzle-dazzle,
feel-it-in-your-gut slingshot moments of flight and believable human
relationships. There’s psychological weight to go with all of the
gravity-defying, webslinging weightlessness.”
Ty Burr (Boston Globe)
“I’m still not convinced we needed a new Spider-Man
series, but at least this installment is interestingly mediocre instead
of actively bad. Andrew Garfield seems more than ever to be channeling
the spirit of the late Anthony Perkins … and the idea that Peter Parker
might have a little Norman Bates in him is perversely cheering.”
